Community Shaken as Woman Is Fatally Shot in South Mackay; Suspect Faces Murder Charges

South Mackay, Australia — A tragic incident unfolded in a quiet neighborhood when a 34-year-old woman was fatally shot through her car window, police said Thursday. Natalie Frahm, the victim, was described by friends as a devoted mother and vibrant community member.

A 31-year-old man who police allege resided on the same street as Frahm, though not personally known to her, has been charged with her murder and the attempted murder of a neighbor who bravely responded to help.

The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, as Frahm was parked in her driveway on Robb Place. Authorities have identified the suspect as Ryan Geoffrey Cole, who lived a short distance from where the incident took place.

Frahm’s family, mourning a profound loss, provided a photograph of her but requested privacy, declining to make any statements. She leaves behind her partner and a tightly knit family based in Mount Isa. In her brother’s business, where she was employed as a customer service manager, Natalie was praised for her culinary skills and her active lifestyle that included camping, motorbike riding, and skateboarding.

Her commitment extended into her personal passions as well. Described as a “Muay Thai boxing fanatic” and an “absolute rockstar” in her community, her sudden death has left friends and acquaintances in shock.

Nick Vanderzee, a local Muay Thai gym owner who knew Frahm for two years, recounted her as an extraordinary person with a generous spirit. “It’s just devastating to lose such a kind and beautiful person,” Vanderzee said. He shared with the community that despite the grief, the gym held a training session where attendees cried and supported each other, highlighting her impactful presence.

At the time of the attack, Frahm’s two children, ages 11 and 12, were also in the car. They managed to escape and alerted a 66-year-old neighbor, who subsequently approached the assailant and was shot in the hand and sternum. Police praised the bravery and quick thinking of the children, stating that their actions likely prevented further tragedy. The neighbor is currently recovering in Mackay Base Hospital and is expected to undergo surgery.

Detective Acting Superintendent Emma Novosel addressed the media, explaining the nature of the weaponry involved and confirmed the children were en route to a sports activity with Frahman. She described the event as a “tragic incident” and commended the resilience of the young girls.

The situation escalated when Cole left the scene, prompting police to issue an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act, locking down local streets. Cole was later apprehended at a service station along the Bruce Highway without incident.

Officials are now focusing on understanding the motives behind the violent act and investigating Cole’s history, including his previous license for firearms and the revocation of his right to own weapons in 2021.

As the community grapples with the senseless violence, the priority remains with supporting the traumatized family and ensuring justice for the victims involved in this harrowing ordeal.
