Christmas Tragedy: Heated Dispute Over Funds Leads to Fatal Shooting in Indianapolis Suburb

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — A Christmas celebration took a tragic turn in Camby, a suburb southwest of Indianapolis, when a dispute over holiday funds escalated into a deadly confrontation. Authorities report that an argument led to a shooting, claiming the life of 21-year-old Logan Newman on December 23.

Keymaree Fagin, age 22, has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a handgun by a felon, and pointing a firearm at another person, according to court documents filed in Marion County Superior Court. The incident has drawn attention to the dangers of heated arguments, as well as the implications of illegal gun possession.

According to police reports, the altercation began when Newman was driving Fagin, a female passenger, and another man after picking up Fagin at his home. Upon entering the vehicle, Fagin reportedly brandished a stolen firearm and continued the outing with the group to a Walmart, where they purchased alcohol.

Subsequently, the group traveled to a park in Camby, where tensions escalated. Witnesses reported that Fagin made a phone call to a friend in jail, indicating plans to transfer Christmas money intended for his child into the jailed friend’s commissary account. His comments about joining the friend behind bars sparked concern among the group members, particularly Newman and the female passenger.

Newman and his companion criticized Fagin’s intentions, suggesting that the money should be used for his child instead. This disagreement quickly turned heated, with Fagin allegedly drawing attention to Newman’s perceived disrespect towards his child. As the argument intensified, he reportedly manipulated his handgun within the car.

Witnesses indicated that tension culminated when Newman proposed to resolve their differences physically outside the vehicle. However, Fagin refused, stating instead, “No, I’m going to shoot you,” before he discharged the firearm multiple times at close range.

The gunfire resulted in Newman slumping over the vehicle’s dashboard, causing the car to accelerate uncontrollably and crash into a nearby fence. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived shortly after noon and began a homicide investigation.

Fagin was apprehended nearby shortly after the incident. Surveillance footage has emerged showing Fagin fleeing the vehicle immediately after the crash. During police questioning, he acknowledged having an argument but insisted that someone else fired the gun.

Newman was declared dead at the scene, leaving behind an obituary that reveals he was engaged and expecting a child with his fiancée next year, adding a heartbreaking dimension to the tragedy.

Fagin is currently being held without bond as he awaits a trial scheduled for March 23, 2026. The inquiry remains ongoing, with investigators collecting additional evidence. Court records reveal Fagin has a previous felony conviction within the last 15 years, which renders his possession of a firearm illegal under Indiana law, raising concerns about gun violence and public safety.
