Charges Filed Against Delaware Couple for Kidnapping and Assault of Women with Disabilities

Chester, Pennsylvania residents Michael Swanson, 41, and Nicole Swanson, 37, are facing a multitude of charges after being accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting, and stealing from two adult women with intellectual disabilities. District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer expressed shock at the lack of moral boundaries displayed by the couple.

The investigation began on January 3, 2023, after reports from a concerned family member of one of the victims prompted the Child Abuse and Exploitation Task Force to intervene. The victims, a 27-year-old and a 30-year-old who were former classmates at Chichester High School’s special education program, were introduced to Michael Swanson through a mutual friend.

Allegations suggest that Michael Swanson manipulated the 30-year-old victim, convincing her that her family was stealing her Social Security benefits and that he was the only one who cared for her. Subsequently, the victim moved in with Michael, Nicole, their six children, the 27-year-old woman, and the homeowner.

In February 2023, the 27-year-old victim gave birth, prompting social services to be notified due to her disability and Michael’s history with social services. The situation escalated when Michael relocated both women, Nicole, their seven children, and another woman to Tallahassee, Florida, in an attempt to evade authorities.

Investigators found evidence suggesting that the women were subjected to regular abuse and rape by the Swansons, with the couple also stealing their disability benefits by altering the payee information on their Social Security cards. As a result of the investigation, the Swansons were arrested and extradited to Pennsylvania, where they are currently detained at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility in Delaware County.

Charges against the Swansons include rape, involuntary deviant sexual assault, aggravated indecent sexual assault of a person with a mental disability, kidnapping, theft, and conspiracy. Additional charges are expected to be brought against them in Florida, according to Stollsteimer. The case continues to unfold as authorities work to bring justice to the victims involved.
