Baton Rouge, La. — A shooting that erupted in the food court of the Mall of Louisiana left one person dead and five others injured Thursday afternoon, causing widespread panic among shoppers. Authorities have taken five individuals into custody while the investigation remains ongoing, according to Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas “T.J.” Morse Jr.
The incident was described as a targeted conflict that escalated quickly after a verbal confrontation between two groups. Morse reported that the shots rang out at approximately 1:22 p.m., with surveillance footage providing crucial evidence of the chaotic events that unfolded.
“Two groups engaged in an argument, which unfortunately turned violent,” Morse explained. “Innocent bystanders were in the vicinity and caught in the crossfire.”
Initial reports of the incident indicated that up to ten people may have been injured. However, officials later confirmed that while four individuals sustained minor injuries, another victim remained in critical condition Thursday evening. Among the injured were three seniors from Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, as announced by Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Blanco Boulet.
Expressing sorrow over the incident, Boulet called the violence “senseless” and urged the community to keep the affected families in their thoughts and prayers.
As the scene unfolded, chaos erupted in the mall, with shoppers fleeing in terror and store employees hiding in backrooms. A police officer stationed at the mall, along with a sheriff’s deputy, rushed toward the sound of gunfire as it erupted.
Witnesses described the moments leading up to the shooting. Alex Theriot, a commercial electrician nearby, recalled barricading himself and his coworkers inside their construction site upon hearing the gunfire. “Everyone was panicking,” he said. “I immediately feared the worst.”
Desire Batton, an employee in a clothing store, recounted fleeing her workplace and taking shelter until law enforcement arrived. The sound of breaking glass and sharp gunshots filled the air, creating a dire atmosphere.
As police responded, the mall was surrounded by multiple law enforcement agencies, including federal agents from the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Mall spokesperson Lindsay Kahn described the day as “frightening” and confirmed that the establishment would remain closed for the day.
Law enforcement is working meticulously to determine the specifics of the shooting, including how many firearms were involved and whether other individuals may have been connected to the violence. Morse highlighted that the investigation remains active, with detectives reviewing surveillance footage and appealing for additional eyewitness accounts.
The community remains on edge, particularly as the state grapples with recent violence, including a tragic event in Shreveport where a father shot eight children. Local officials, including Governor Jeff Landry and Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards, expressed their condolences and concern for residents affected by the week’s violence.
With an eye on healing and safety, leaders are now focused on providing support for those impacted by this latest tragedy. For the families awaiting news from hospitals and those who witnessed the chaos firsthand, Thursday’s shooting is a stark reminder of the violence that continues to challenge communities across Louisiana.
