CLEVELAND, OH – An Ohio woman is recovering after being shot in the face during an attempted carjacking Friday morning, an incident that unfolded while her 1-year-old son was still inside the vehicle.
Authorities said the confrontation began just after 7:30 a.m. in a residential neighborhood along Madison Avenue. The woman was approached outside her parked car by a man demanding cash. When she explained she had none, an altercation broke out as the assailant tried to snatch her car keys.
During the struggle, the gun discharged, striking the victim in the face. Despite her injury and with her toddler present, police say the suspect forced his way into the vehicle. The young child was then pulled from the car and left outside in the snow as the suspect sped away with the vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after, providing immediate medical care to the woman before transporting her to a local hospital. She is currently reported to be in stable condition. The child, though exposed to the freezing conditions, did not sustain any physical injuries, officials noted.
Family members expressed shock and relief that the toddler was unharmed, emphasizing the ordeal’s traumatic impact. Neighbors described the scene as chaotic, recalling the child crying on the roadside as police and paramedics converged at the site.
A short search led officers to the stolen vehicle, which was found abandoned not far from the original scene. Subsequent investigation identified 47-year-old Ronald J. Loftis as the primary suspect. He was apprehended the following day on the city’s east side without incident.
Loftis now faces charges including attempted murder and aggravated robbery. He appeared in court Monday and was ordered held on a $500,000 bond, with further proceedings scheduled for January 13.
While the victim continues her recovery, the community has rallied in support, offering assistance and comfort. Police credited quick investigative work for ensuring the swift arrest and urged residents to remain vigilant.
