California Father Sentenced to Life for Torturing and Murdering Toddler Son in Shocking Case

VISALIA, Calif. — A man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty to the murder and torture of his young son, a tragic case that has drawn widespread attention and outrage.

Ezequiel Carlos Ramirez, 28, received his sentence from a Tulare County Superior Court judge on May 20, closing a grim chapter in the prosecution of a case that shook the local community. Ramirez admitted to first-degree murder with special circumstances of torture in the death of his 23-month-old son, Joziah Ramirez. In addition, he pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to involvement in prostitution.

The harrowing events unfolded on June 5, 2020, when Ramirez, the boy, and the boy’s mother, Jasmine Blase, were staying at a motel in Visalia. After reportedly relocating from Fresno to facilitate Ramirez’s prostitution activities, a tragic incident occurred in which Joziah suffered severe abuse. While Blase was away from their room, Ramirez attacked the child. Rather than seeking help, he allegedly sent a message instructing Blase to return. Upon her arrival, she found Joziah unresponsive, displaying irregular breathing and surrounded by blood. Ramirez attempted to minimize his actions, claiming he had only kicked the boy.

Emergency responders contacted authorities shortly after Ramirez left the motel, having deleted information from Blase’s phone. Joziah was transported to a local hospital but sadly passed away on June 9, 2020, after being airlifted to a children’s hospital. An autopsy revealed that the toddler suffered extensive injuries, including skull fractures and signs of blunt force trauma, pointing to a brutal assault.

The investigation revealed more than just a tragic incident in a motel room. In the early hours following the attack, Ramirez contacted a friend, claiming he had been in a car accident. He spent the night at the friend’s house but left behind personal belongings stained with blood. Law enforcement ultimately apprehended him four days later. During that period, evidence showed Ramirez continued to seek recruits for his prostitution operation.

Initially, he denied knowledge of the incident but later admitted to being present during the abuse, attempting to minimize the severity of his actions. Prosecutors, however, presented evidence of a pattern of violence, highlighting previous allegations of abuse against Joziah. Family members described the child as intelligent and active, further intensifying the tragedy of his untimely death.

The prosecution underscored Ramirez’s criminal background, which included a history of violent offenses. At the time of Joziah’s death, he was on parole for robbery and statutory rape, with specific restrictions prohibiting contact with Blase and their child. Despite these restrictions, he was living with them and exploiting Blase, who was still in her teens at the time of the incident.

Ramirez’s guilty plea, entered in March 2023, spared him the ordeal of a trial while ensuring a severe punishment. During sentencing, Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward emphasized the stark contrast between the brutality exhibited by Ramirez and the innocence of his young son. The courtroom echoed with the family’s grief, poignantly expressed by those who remarked that there is no closure in circumstances like this—only a lingering sense of sorrow.

As Ramirez begins his life sentence, the legal proceedings continue for Blase, who has been charged with child endangerment. She is scheduled to be sentenced later this month, facing a potential maximum of six years in prison. The case remains a painful reminder of the consequences of parental neglect and abuse, resonating deeply within the community and beyond.
