KATY, TX – In a west Houston neighborhood, a shocking double homicide ripped through the early morning calm, leaving a tight-knit family in mourning and a community unsettled.
Authorities in Harris County have charged 42-year-old Norman Lee Johnson with two counts of capital murder after he allegedly shot and killed Christopher Lopez, 52, and Trinette Rayson-Lopez, 52, in their Katy home earlier this month. Investigators believe the violence stemmed from a long-brewing dispute over the custody of Johnson’s biological daughter, who had been adopted by the couple.
The incident unfolded just before dawn on January 12, when a 911 call from one of the Lopezes’ adult children summoned deputies to the family’s home on Bent Springs Lane. Responding officers encountered a gruesome scene: Christopher Lopez was found near the living room with a fatal gunshot wound, while Trinette Rayson-Lopez lay near the kitchen, having been shot multiple times.
During the time of the attack, three other family members — two adults in their 20s and a 7-year-old girl — were asleep upstairs. Miraculously, they were not physically harmed, but by the time they reached the ground floor, their parents were already beyond help.
Detectives found no evidence of forced entry, suggesting that the assailant either knew the victims or had been let inside. Authorities revealed that the home had been the site of previous law enforcement visits, an indication that familial tensions had existed long before the deadly confrontation.
