Benefits of Social Security at Risk for Kenosha Senior Citizens

Kenosha, Wisconsin – Local senior citizens in Kenosha, including Craig Martin and Leslie Mcpeek, are facing concerns about the future, particularly regarding their social security benefits. Martin, who relies on social security as a significant source of income, worries about the potential consequences if these benefits were to disappear. “I would lose a good chunk of income and I’d have to figure out how I’m going to make that up and or change my lifestyle,” Martin stated. “That’s really the only two options you have … or go back to work.”

In anticipation of a projected depletion of the trust fund’s reserves in 2034, which could lead to reduced benefits for seniors, the local community is already feeling the pressure. Mcpeek, who teaches tennis for additional income, expressed her concerns about dipping into her savings. “You never know how much is enough when you have money put aside,” Mcpeek shared. “So it’s really scary every time I dip in, I think will I regret this?”

The Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans recently brought its statewide tour to Kenosha to address the growing concerns of the senior population. The president of the Alliance, Ross Winklbauer, highlighted the organization’s focus on protecting and enhancing social security, supporting Medicare, and standing behind labor groups and unions. Martin emphasized the importance of safeguarding these benefits not only for himself but also for future generations. “I mean, I think anybody in their right mind would be concerned about it,” Martin voiced.

With nine more stops scheduled in the coming month, the Alliance continues its mission of advocating for senior citizens across the state. Their next appearance is set for Manitowoc on Wednesday at noon. As the conversation around social security benefits and financial security for seniors continues, the community remains united in ensuring a stable future for all retirees.
