Alpharetta Police Arrest Suspect in Rare Homicide Following Late-Night Argument

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A fatal shooting incident that occurred late Wednesday night in Alpharetta has led to the arrest of a local man, authorities announced. The event has stirred concern in a community known for its safety and vibrant downtown scene.

The Alpharetta Police Department reported responding to a call about gunfire around 11 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 9 and Milton Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered 46-year-old Justin Mourning suffering from gunshot wounds. Mourning, a resident of Alpharetta, was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.

Following an initial investigation, police said the violence appeared to have stemmed from a dispute between Mourning and another individual. The nature of their relationship and the details of the argument remain unclear, adding complexity to the case.

In an effort to apprehend the suspect, police released surveillance images of a man seen fleeing the area on a motorcycle. This led to the arrest of 21-year-old Jaden Lewis from Milton on Thursday evening. Lewis faces charges of murder and aggravated assault.

Local business owners expressed shock and concern over the incident. Christine Tamisin, who has operated “Sis and Moons,” a boutique near the crime scene, for over a decade, remarked on the rarity of such violent occurrences in downtown Alpharetta. “It’s unsettling,” she said. “This area has always felt secure, but it goes to show that vigilance is crucial.”

Barbara McAllister, employed at “Karen’s Fabrics,” shared similar sentiments, noting that while minor crimes do occur, gunfire was unheard of. The presence of numerous dining and shopping establishments generally lends a bustling yet safe atmosphere to the neighborhood.

Police Captain Andrew Splawn addressed the incident, emphasizing the unusual nature of the event in Alpharetta. “Last year, the city saw no murders, and overall violent crime is minimal,” Splawn stated, reassuring residents and visitors of the general safety of the area.

The local community, while rattled by this event, is reminded of the need to stay observant and report any suspicious activities. Detective Lawrence, who is leading the investigation, has urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward.

This shooting, an anomaly in Alpharetta’s history of low crime rates, underscores the unpredictable nature of public safety and the ongoing need for community vigilance. As the investigation continues, residents and local authorities are hopeful for a swift resolution to bring peace back to their community.
