Adolescent Substance Use Trends Revealed in Latest HBSC Study Volume

LONDON, England – The Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, conducted in collaboration with the WHO Regional Office for Europe, is a comprehensive survey that takes place every four years. This study utilizes data collected from adolescents aged 11, 13, and 15 across 44 countries and regions in Europe, central Asia, and Canada. The aim of the study is to provide valuable insights into the health and well-being of young people, address the social determinants of health, and influence policy and practice to enhance the lives of adolescents.

The 2021/2022 HBSC survey results have been compiled into a series of volumes, with Volume 3 focusing on adolescent substance use. This volume delves into key findings related to cigarette smoking, electronic cigarette use, alcohol consumption, drunkenness, and cannabis use among adolescents. It also examines the impact of factors such as gender, age, and social inequality on adolescent substance use behaviors, as well as changes in these behaviors over time. The findings from this survey serve as a crucial reference point for ongoing research, intervention efforts, and policy development in the field.

One of the significant aspects covered in the 2021/2022 HBSC survey is the prevalence of different types of substance use among adolescents. The data provides a clear picture of the current status of substance use behaviors, highlighting trends and patterns across various demographics. Understanding these behaviors is essential for designing targeted interventions that can effectively address substance use among adolescents.

Moreover, the report sheds light on the role of social determinants in influencing adolescent substance use. Factors such as socioeconomic status, family dynamics, and peer influence play a significant role in shaping adolescents’ attitudes and behaviors towards substance use. By identifying these underlying influences, policymakers and healthcare professionals can tailor interventions to better meet the specific needs of at-risk youth.

In addition to examining the current landscape of adolescent substance use, the report also explores how these behaviors have evolved over time. By analyzing trends and shifts in substance use patterns, researchers can identify emerging issues and areas of concern. This information is vital for developing prevention strategies and policies that can effectively address the changing needs of adolescents in today’s society.
