Abortion Access Campaign in Colorado Gathers Over 225,000 Signatures for Ballot Initiative

Denver, Colorado – Colorado is at the forefront of the battle for abortion rights, with campaigns underway to enshrine these rights in the state’s constitution. Among nearly a dozen states with citizen-led initiatives on the ballot this fall, Colorado stands out for its progressive abortion laws, which currently have no gestational limits in place.

Jessica Grennan, the campaign director of Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom, acknowledges the financial barriers that many Coloradans face in accessing abortion services. To address this issue, a coalition of reproductive health and justice groups is advocating for a constitutional amendment that would not only preserve abortion rights but also eliminate a 40-year-old law prohibiting the use of public insurance to pay for abortions. This proposed Initiative 89 aims to expand access to abortion for over a million people working at public institutions and covered by state Medicaid.

The coalition comprises organizations such as ACLU Colorado, Cobalt, Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights, Interfaith Alliance of Colorado, New Era Colorado, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, and ProgressNow Colorado. With a deadline of April 26 to gather nearly 125,000 valid signatures across Colorado’s 35 state Senate districts, the campaign announced exceeding 225,000 signatures, positioning them well to qualify for the ballot later this month.

Grennan emphasizes the urgency of securing abortion rights in the wake of Arizona’s near-total abortion ban, underscoring the vulnerability of states without constitutional protections. She brings a unique perspective to the campaign, having worked on various ballot initiatives and personally experiencing challenges related to reproductive health care and medical debt.

As the campaign gains momentum, Grennan remains optimistic about their chances of success in qualifying for the ballot in November. The team’s robust volunteer program and grassroots support are driving their efforts, with a strong focus on storytelling and community engagement to rally support for abortion rights in Colorado.

Despite facing challenges typical of pro-abortion campaigns, including higher costs and the need to secure a majority vote, Grennan believes that public sentiment is shifting in favor of reproductive rights. By sharing personal stories and connecting with voters on a human level, the campaign aims to counter any opposition effectively.

Looking ahead, the possibility of a competing anti-abortion initiative (Initiative 81) making it onto the ballot creates further uncertainty. However, Grennan remains focused on the mission to secure abortion rights and ensure access to essential health care services for all Coloradans. Personal experiences, like her battle with endometriosis, drive Grennan’s commitment to fighting for abortion access and empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
