PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL – Shoppers browsing through the quiet aisles of a local Barnes & Noble were thrown into chaos Monday night when a woman was fatally attacked without warning, turning a routine evening into a scene of unimaginable horror.
Authorities say the violent incident unfolded just before 8 p.m. inside the popular bookstore on Legacy Avenue, leaving customers and employees in shock. When officers responded to frantic 911 calls, they found 65-year-old Rita Loncharich gravely injured and suffering from a stab wound to her back. Emergency crews rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she was pronounced dead during surgery.
Investigators quickly pieced together what happened, relying on the accounts of witnesses and footage from security cameras inside the store. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Antonio Moore, had arrived in Palm Beach Gardens recently after traveling from Georgia by bus. Officials said Moore had no known connection to Loncharich prior to the attack.
Moore was located less than half a mile from the scene, hiding in nearby woods, and was apprehended without further incident. Police allege he confessed to the stabbing and indicated the attack was not premeditated; he had simply chosen his victim because she happened to be the closest person to him in the bookstore.
According to authorities, Moore described a mounting internal tension that eventually boiled over, leading him to pull a fixed-blade knife from his jacket and strike Loncharich from behind. Witnesses recalled her shouting in shock as she realized what had happened.
After the assault, Moore fled, leaving behind a community rattled by the senseless violence. As news of the tragedy spread, management at the Legacy Place shopping plaza expressed condolences to Loncharich’s family and reaffirmed their commitment to the safety of patrons and store employees. Moore faces charges of first-degree murder and is being held without bond at the Palm Beach County Jail. Court records show his initial appearance is scheduled for January 22.
