SURPRISE, AZ – Police say four fifth-grade girls at an elementary charter school in the Phoenix area are facing charges after allegedly conspiring to kill a classmate during school hours, an incident authorities described as “shocking.”
According to law enforcement, the alleged murder plot unfolded in October at Legacy Traditional School’s West Surprise campus, alarming parents and educators in the Surprise community, roughly 25 miles northwest of Phoenix. The girls, all aged 10 or 11, reportedly developed the plan during lunch and recess, assigning themselves distinct roles in the intended attack on a male classmate.
Officials said the motive behind the plot stemmed from a falling out between the boy and one of the girls whom he had previously been “dating.” The breakup appears to have sparked the group’s plan for revenge, police said. The accused students allegedly discussed stabbing the boy in a bathroom and tried to cover up the crime by forging a suicide note.
Each girl reportedly had an assigned responsibility: one was tasked with bringing a knife, another with writing the note, a third with acting as a lookout, and the fourth with carrying out the stabbing. Investigators noted that the girls had considered wearing gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints.
The conspirators’ plan came to light after other students overheard details of the plot and told their parents, prompting a quick response from school officials who alerted local authorities.
Following these reports, police searched the girls’ backpacks and questioned them individually in the presence of their parents. Within days, all four students were arrested and charged with misdemeanor counts of threatening and disorderly conduct.
While three of the girls expressed regret for their involvement, investigators said the fourth girl seemed unfazed and even amused by the situation. None of the children have been publicly identified due to their ages.
Legacy Traditional School did not immediately provide comment on how the incident has impacted its campus or what preventive measures are being implemented moving forward.
As of now, no further details are being released by police, who cited the sensitive nature of the case and the age of those involved. The incident has raised serious concerns among parents and community members regarding school safety and the mental health needs of young students.
It remains unclear why a report detailing the alleged plot, which occurred several months ago, was only recently made public. The case continues to prompt discussions about addressing conflict and violence among children in schools, particularly in connection to social dynamics and peer relationships.
