25-year-old mother taking her 6-year-old little boy to school is gunned down in front of him by her ex-boyfriend

BLUFFTON, SC – A South Carolina man will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of his former girlfriend, who was shot and killed in front of her 6-year-old son as they prepared for school last March.

John Patrick Shea, 29, stood before a judge in Beaufort County on Wednesday, expressing remorse for the killing of 25-year-old Jillian Angner. The sentencing followed a dramatic court appearance during which Shea admitted to four felonies, including Angner’s murder and the attempted murder of her young son.

Authorities say Shea’s relationship with Angner ended in October 2022, but trouble escalated in the months that followed. Angner reported to officials that Shea began stalking her and had broken into her residence multiple times, heightening concerns for her safety leading up to the deadly incident.

On March 2, 2023, prosecutors say Shea arranged for a friend—unaware of his true intentions—to drive him to Angner’s Bluffton residence. Armed and lying in wait, Shea opened fire as Angner and her son prepared to leave for school in their Jeep Cherokee. The child managed to escape by crawling out of the car and hiding in a marsh nearby. Angner suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including a critical injury to her neck.

After the shooting, Angner remained on life support for several months but never regained consciousness. She died on August 5, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.

Shea evaded capture for several days before authorities picked him up as he attempted to flee South Carolina. Investigators discovered Shea packing his vehicle, carrying both a passport and birth certificate—indications he may have been planning to leave the country.

During their probe, detectives uncovered chilling evidence in Shea’s apartment, including defaced photos of Angner, occult objects, and handwritten notes relating to stalking other past romantic partners. Particularly disturbing was a letter from Shea’s mother detailing her fear for his mental stability and a direct threat he had made against his own brother.

The investigation also revealed that Shea had sought to establish a false alibi by leaving his car at a bar the day of the murder. Records and notes from as far back as 2008 suggested a pattern of stalking behavior toward other women he had dated.

As Shea’s trial began, witnesses described the events preceding Angner’s murder. Shea abruptly admitted his guilt on the second day, asking the court for a life sentence and expressing deep regret to Angner’s family for the pain he caused them.

Circuit Court Judge S. Bryan Doby imposed a life sentence with no possibility of parole, plus the maximum penalties for additional charges, including the attempted murder of a child, use of a firearm during a violent crime, and firing into an occupied vehicle.

With the sentence, officials said Shea will spend the remainder of his life behind bars. Angner’s family and local authorities hope the outcome brings some measure of closure after a case that has shaken the Bluffton community.
