16-year-old Connecticut girl is shot in the head by boyfriend while on Facetime call with her friend

HARTFORD, CT – A Connecticut 19-year-old has learned his fate in court after a violent confrontation left his girlfriend with life-altering injuries in a case that unfolded during a video call and shocked those who witnessed the attack.

Jayzon Gunter, now 19, received an eight-year prison sentence after entering a guilty plea to attempted first-degree assault and attempted third-degree strangulation. Prosecutors had initially charged Gunter with attempted murder, but reduced the charges as part of a plea agreement. The incident, which occurred in September 2024 when Gunter was 18, stemmed from a heated dispute reportedly triggered by a phone call his girlfriend made to another woman known to Gunter.

Authorities said the girlfriend was speaking with a friend on FaceTime when the situation at the residence escalated into violence. The friend, alarmed by what was unfolding, used her phone to record the altercation. The recording captured the moments leading up to the shooting, including Gunter holding a firearm to his girlfriend’s head before pulling the trigger.

When the shot rang out, a female witness inside the home said she rushed to the room and found the teen victim bleeding heavily from the head and vomiting blood. Witnesses described a scene of chaos and horror as the gravity of the attack became apparent.

Investigators later learned that before the shooting, Gunter allegedly attempted to suffocate his girlfriend using a phone cord, according to statements collected by police. The sequence of escalating violence appeared to have been preceded by threats, authorities reported.

The wounded teenager was placed in a medically induced coma at the hospital. From her hospital bed, she provided law enforcement with vital information, giving Gunter’s first name and mentioning his street alias “Rich Rack” to medical staff. Her statements helped solidify the police investigation.

Gunter was apprehended at a different residence on an unrelated matter. Despite confirming he had been at the location during the shooting, Gunter denied being responsible, claiming instead that he heard a gunshot from another room.

As part of his sentence, Gunter will also serve three years of probation following his release. Any violation of that probation could trigger an additional 12 years of incarceration, as specified by the terms set by the court.

The rapid response by law enforcement and medical teams likely played a crucial role in the victim’s survival, though the physical and emotional effects of the attack continue to impact her life. The disturbing nature of the case and the evidence captured via cellphones have drawn attention to the ongoing concerns surrounding teen dating violence and the risks of domestic conflict escalating to deadly levels.

According to court records, authorities and witnesses worked swiftly to piece together the events, collecting video evidence and questioning those present in the aftermath. The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violence among young people and underscores the importance of early intervention and support for those at risk.
