11-year-old Georgia girl’s body found propped up in recliner after her mother stabs her to death

SANDY SPRINGS, GA – What began as a frantic 911 call ended in tragedy this week when police discovered an eleven-year-old girl’s lifeless body, carefully positioned upright in a living room recliner. Her mother, Shannen Grimes, 42, now faces multiple charges, including murder and cruelty to children, following an investigation that has left a quiet Sandy Springs community reeling.

Officers responded to a Laurel Grove condominium on November 14 after Grimes’ sister reported a potential suicide attempt. Inside, they found Grimes suffering from what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds to her wrist, but the situation quickly turned even more grave as they uncovered the extent of the violence inside the home.

Seated motionless in a recliner near the living room couch, 11-year-old Genesis Grimes was found already deceased, her legs draped with a blanket or towel. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene, while her mother was rushed to a hospital for medical attention before being taken into custody.

Detectives later revealed that Genesis had suffered multiple puncture wounds to her neck and shoulder area. Although there was little visible blood on her body, officers noted signs that an attempt had been made to clean and arrange her, perhaps in a desperate bid to obscure the violence.

The scene offered stark evidence of the events that transpired. Authorities recovered blood-stained knives by the kitchen sink and discovered items throughout the home that appeared to have been used to wipe up blood, including paper towels, buckets, and trash cans soaked with traces of red. The investigation extended to Grimes’ bedroom, where bloody clothing and bedding, some bearing holes matching the wounds on Genesis’s neck and shoulders, were stashed in a box.

As medics prepared Grimes for transport, officers questioned her about her daughter’s death. She allegedly gave the chilling response, “I happened,” before reportedly admitting to stabbing Genesis in the neck while in the ambulance.

With the evidence collected, Grimes was charged with two counts of murder as well as child cruelty, possession of a weapon during commission of a felony, and tampering with evidence. She was booked into the Fulton County Jail after treatment at the hospital. Authorities have not set bond.

Neighbors in the typically quiet condominium were shocked by the crime, as police continued to comb the area for further clues in the hours following the grim discovery. Court documents detail the careful efforts to clean the scene, adding a further layer of mystery to a case that has rattled the local community.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities await further forensic results and continue to piece together the moments leading up to the incident. For now, one family is left shattered—its devastation all too visible behind doors that once offered protection from tragedy.
