MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A 16-year-old boy was sentenced to 15 years in prison Wednesday for the reckless theft of a vehicle that resulted in the death of 47-year-old Sunita Balogun in a hotel parking lot. Following his prison term, he will face an additional decade of extended supervision.
Jayden Adams, who was just 13 when the tragic incident occurred in 2021, pleaded guilty to charges including second-degree reckless homicide and vehicle theft. The confrontation began when Balogun attempted to prevent Adams and his companions from stealing her car, a red Hyundai, parked outside the hotel.
The situation escalated dramatically when Balogun approached the group, having parked her Jeep SUV nearby. Witnesses reported that tensions flared, and one of the teenagers punched Balogun. In the ensuing chaos, Adams entered her vehicle, and as Balogun lay on the ground, he struck her with the car door and ran over her, leading to her fatal injuries.
Eyewitnesses noted that after the collision, Adams fled the scene with several other teens in the vehicle. When questioned about his actions, he reportedly admitted to killing Balogun, raising grave concerns about the lack of empathy exhibited by the group.
Emergency responders pronounced Balogun dead at the scene. Shockingly, it was reported that none of the individuals involved stopped to check on her wellbeing following the incident, highlighting the callousness of the situation.
Adams was initially charged with multiple serious felonies, including first-degree reckless homicide and a hit-and-run resulting in death. However, under a plea deal, the charges were reduced, and he accepted accountability for his actions.
Given the circumstances surrounding the crime and Adams’ age, he was prosecuted as an adult. The decision to treat him as such reflects the severity of the incident and its consequences on the victim’s family and the community.
