US Condemns Attack on UN Peacekeepers in Beirut as Hezbollah Supporters Target UNIFIL Convoy

Beirut, Lebanon — The U.S. government issued a strong condemnation of a recent attack on a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) convoy in Beirut, which left a senior UN peacekeeper injured. The assault occurred close to the Rafik Hariri International Airport, an area that became a flashpoint of tension following the approval of an Iranian aircraft’s landing on Thursday.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce expressed indignation over the violence, attributing it to alleged supporters of Hezbollah. “We condemn the violent attack on a UNIFIL convoy in Beirut, Lebanon,” Bruce stated. The spokesperson also lauded the Lebanese Armed Forces for their prompt intervention, which helped prevent further violence.

Bruce further reiterated the U.S. commitment to support efforts by the Lebanese government in ensuring that those responsible for the attack are held accountable. “We extend our wishes for a swift recovery to all those affected,” she added.

During the incident, protesters reportedly encircled a UNIFIL vehicle, ultimately setting it ablaze. The confrontation escalated shortly after a contentious decision by Lebanon to allow an Iranian plane to land, a move that provoked heated protests by Hezbollah supporters blocking entry to the airport.

According to a UNIFIL statement, the convoy was escorting the Deputy Force Commander, who was wounded while preparing to depart Lebanon at the culmination of his mission. The identity of the injured peacekeeper has not been disclosed.

The backdrop to these events includes accusations from Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee. On Wednesday, Adraee charged Hezbollah and Iran’s Quds Force with using civilian flights from the airport to transfer funds and armaments to bolster Hezbollah’s operations.

Responding to the assault, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his condemnation, underscoring that attacks on peacekeepers breach international law. He advocated for a thorough investigation and for holding the offenders accountable.

UNIFIL, which has been operational under Security Council Resolution 1701 since 2006, plays a critical role in maintaining peace and security in southern Lebanon. The resolution mandates the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area and sets up a weapons-free zone extending from Israel’s border (delineated by the Blue Line from their withdrawal in 2000) up to the Litani River, exclusively permitting activities by the Lebanese army and UNIFIL.

The recent surge of violence highlights the volatile dynamics in Lebanon, wherein foreign policy decisions can rapidly escalate into major security incidents. This attack on UN peacekeepers not only raises concerns about the safety of international forces but also about the overall stability in the region as political tensions continue to simmer.
