Douglasville, Georgia — A tragic incident unfolded Saturday night when Sabrina Walker, 56, was shot and killed by her husband outside their home just hours ahead of her birthday celebration and the reopening of her barbershop. The event has deeply affected the local community, which is now grappling with the shocking loss.
According to authorities, the confrontation between Sabrina and her husband, Volanta Lejuan Walker, 51, escalated during an argument. As the argument intensified, Sabrina attempted to escape outside, but Volanta allegedly pursued her and opened fire.
When police arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m., they discovered Sabrina on the ground with fatal gunshot wounds. Volanta was still at the location with a firearm. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, ordering him to drop the weapon. Instead, he allegedly aimed it at the officers, leading one of them to discharge their weapon in response.
Volanta was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital after being shot by police. Unfortunately, Sabrina was declared dead at the scene. As of now, formal charges against Volanta regarding the incident have not been filed. Investigators from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are conducting parallel inquiries into both the homicide and the officer-involved shooting, which will be reviewed by the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for potential action.
The heartbreaking event coincided with what should have been a day of joy for family and friends. Sabrina was set to celebrate her 57th birthday and the grand reopening of her barbershop, Groomsmen Atlanta, which she had owned since 2009. Family members shared that she had dedicated months to renovating and expanding the establishment, a project she was truly passionate about.
Despite their sorrow, Sabrina’s family went ahead with the barbershop’s reopening the following day as a tribute to her enduring spirit and commitment to her craft. Loved ones gathered to honor her memory, reminiscing about her hard work and the legacy she aimed to create.
Her daughters described the emotional day as surreal, emphasizing the profound absence felt throughout the shop and the wider community. They highlighted their mother’s vibrant personality and unwavering dedication, which had left an indelible mark on those around her.
Members of the Douglasville community joined the family to celebrate Sabrina’s life, expressing their resolve to continue her dreams for the shop. Friends and customers described her as a warm and dynamic presence who had a significant influence on many lives.
As the community mourns, questions remain about the circumstances leading to the fatal confrontation. Investigators continue their work, but no timeline has been provided for when any findings or potential charges might be announced.
