TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A couple in Florida is facing severe charges related to the tragic death of their five-year-old daughter, who authorities believe suffered extended abuse at home. Daniel Spencer, 35, and his wife, Chloe Spencer, 23, are both charged with second-degree murder after investigations revealed alarming details surrounding the child’s treatment.
Surveillance footage obtained by investigators shows Daniel Spencer committing acts of violence against Melissa Mogle, including physically restraining her and pushing her face into a bed. Further evidence includes images of Chloe Spencer poised to strike her daughter, to which she later confessed, admitting to hitting the child with a shoe.
As the investigation progressed, prosecutors upgraded the charges against the couple from child abuse to murder, shedding light on the extent of the abuse the child allegedly endured. Complicating matters for Daniel Spencer is his recent conviction for attempting to meet a minor, a case that raised questions about his continued freedom pending sentencing.
Both parents have a troubling history with child services. Daniel Spencer was previously scrutinized by the Florida Department of Children and Families and local police due to prior allegations of molestation involving the young girl. However, those investigations did not lead to any arrests, prompting criticism from advocates for child protection.
Jasmine Hartsfield, who acted as Melissa’s godmother, voiced her anger over the system’s failure to protect the girl. She questioned how authorities overlooked the blatant signs of distress and abuse, emphasizing the need for accountability within agencies responsible for child welfare.
Authorities arrived on the scene on May 10 after receiving a distress call about an unresponsive child. They found Melissa’s grandfather performing CPR in a desperate attempt to revive her. Tragically, she was pronounced dead later at a hospital despite these efforts.
Initially, the parents claimed that Melissa struggled with “behavioral issues,” including episodes where she would hold her breath until she lost consciousness during tantrums. However, inconsistencies in their narrative began to emerge as investigators dug deeper into the case.
An autopsy performed on the child revealed concerning signs of malnutrition alongside visible bruises, amplifying suspicions of chronic neglect. The investigation continues as law enforcement works diligently to uncover the full scope of events that led to Melissa’s heartbreaking demise, with a commitment to ensuring justice for the innocent child.
