Michigan Man Faces Potential Murder Charge Following Death of Woman He Allegedly Attacked

CARROLLTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 30-year-old man may soon face murder charges following the death of a woman who had been hospitalized for months after a violent attack. Kelley LaLonde, 35, passed away on May 26, as confirmed by a GoFundMe page established to assist with funeral costs. LaLonde had been in critical condition since September 2024, allegedly due to injuries inflicted by Jonathan M. Zieroff. Initially charged with assault with intent to murder, Zieroff now faces potential additional charges after LaLonde was declared brain-dead on May 13.

LaLonde was well-loved and remembered for her vivacious personality. A passionate fan of singing, dancing, and classic television, she also had a deep admiration for Elvis Presley and was an avid supporter of Michigan Football. Her passing has left a profound impact on her family, particularly her three young children, ages 14, 11, and 3.

The tragic sequence of events began when LaLonde’s mother reported her daughter missing after being unable to contact her for five days. This prompted law enforcement to investigate. Authorities discovered LaLonde in Zieroff’s Carrollton Township residence in a grave state, showcasing signs of severe abuse and neglect.

Medical examinations revealed substantial bodily harm, including a skull fracture, numerous bruises, and indications of significant trauma. Investigators became suspicious of Zieroff after learning that LaLonde had previously indicated she had been abused by him, raising concerns that ultimately led her mother to seek help.

Zieroff initially evaded detection at the scene but was arrested the next day after police tracked his location via his cell phone, which led them to a nearby wooded area. He is currently being held in the Saginaw County Jail on a $50,000 bond, as he awaits further legal proceedings.

An autopsy and toxicology tests are underway to determine the specific causes of LaLonde’s death, a crucial step that will inform the prosecution’s next moves against Zieroff. Saginaw County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Blair N. Stevenson stated that a decision regarding potential murder charges may take up to three weeks following the medical findings.

Zieroff already faces significant charges, including assault with intent to cause great bodily harm and second-offense aggravated domestic violence. His next court date is scheduled for July 3, where further developments in the case may unfold.

As authorities continue to gather evidence, the community remains vigilant, hoping for justice and closure in a case marked by tragedy and loss.
