HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, MI – A Michigan man has been arrested and faces first-degree murder charges after allegedly shooting his fiancée, initially reported by him as an accidental mishap. The incident, which led to the death of 23-year-old Rachel Renee Wooten, has triggered a detailed police investigation that contradicts the suspect’s account of the event.
Michael Devon Webb, 21, notified law enforcement himself on April 15, claiming an accidental shooting occurred at their residence on Maple Drive, roughly 40 miles from Detroit. Upon arrival, Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies found Wooten fatally injured with a gunshot to her neck and pronounced her dead at the scene.
While Webb also sustained a minor injury, his claim that the gun discharged accidentally as he cleaned it quickly came under scrutiny by detectives. The investigative team, led by Sheriff Michael Bouchard, deemed the circumstances suspicious, as the evidence collected did not support Webb’s version of the events.
“This case is particularly tragic, considering the victim had her whole future ahead of her,” said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. She assured that her office is committed to delivering justice for Wooten, whose life was abruptly ended in what has now been classified as a domestic homicide.
Following the arrest, Webb was held at Oakland County Jail without the possibility of bail. His preliminary hearing, where further details of the case will be examined, is scheduled for April 30. A conviction for first-degree murder in Michigan carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole, underscoring the severe implications of the charge.
