The footage comes from Richardson Mortuary, where a visitor, related to one of the deceased, recorded the concerning scenes.
The unsettling video reveals multiple bodies stored under what appear to be unsanitary conditions. Prompted by the viral spread of the footage, several families rushed to the facility to check on their loved ones. This includes one woman who was horrified to discover her grandmother’s body, supposedly cremated the previous month, still at the mortuary.
Adding to the turmoil, the situation escalated into violence when the employee who was allegedly responsible for the mishandling was accused of stabbing the person who filmed the unsettling scenes. Law enforcement described the injury as minor and is investigating the circumstances, including the potential for self-defense.
Tamara McGruder, the sister of the man who captured the grim footage, recounted the horror inside the mortuary, describing a scene crowded with unattended bodies in the middle of construction and lacking proper ventilation. “It’s like a horror scene,” she said, referencing the unbearable smell and visible insects.
Murita Brown, another aggrieved family member, recognized her grandmother’s distinctive purple dress in the video. She expressed profound grief and frustration over the prolonged delay in her grandmother’s cremation process. “We’ve been waiting, and nothing was happening,” Brown lamented.
The crisis deepened for Demetria Riley-Sylvester, who was under the impression that her brother had been cremated. The revelation that he was still physically present at the facility left her feeling deceived and disrespected.
Authorities have begun delving into the allegations, with Harris County law enforcement actively investigating. Constable Smokie Phillips indicated that the owner of the mortuary, who has reportedly suffered a health crisis amidst the controversy, had begun transferring bodies to other locations. Phillips, who knows the owner personally, stressed the complexity of the situation.
This is not the first instance of concern regarding Richardson Mortuary, as it has been the subject of 14 complaints over the past decade.
