"Grandson Indicted for First-Degree Murder Following Fatal Assault on 72-Year-Old Grandmother in Delaware Hotel"

LEWES, Del. — A 30-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of his grandmother, whose injuries were sustained during an incident in a hotel room earlier this year. The indictment of Dempsey Fritchey came after his 72-year-old grandmother, Elizabeth Fritchey, succumbed to her injuries in early February.

The case began on the evening of January 29 at the Hyatt House hotel in Lewes. Hotel staff alerted authorities after Dempsey Fritchey approached them, claiming he had harmed his grandmother. Upon arrival, police found him in the lobby, where he allegedly confessed to committing the act. Officers quickly took him into custody and proceeded to check on the condition of Elizabeth Fritchey.

Inside the hotel room, emergency responders discovered Elizabeth Fritchey unconscious, with severe injuries to her head and face. Medical personnel rendered aid and transported her to a nearby hospital, where she remained critically injured until her death on February 10.

Initially arrested on an assault charge, Dempsey Fritchey’s case escalated to murder after Elizabeth’s death. A Sussex County grand jury handed down the indictment for first-degree murder on April 13, over two months after the incident occurred. Dempsey Fritchey is now in custody at the Delaware Department of Correction, awaiting legal proceedings.

Authorities have indicated that the assault took place while the pair was staying together. However, the specific circumstances leading up to the attack remain unclear, with police stating that Fritchey assaulted his grandmother with no apparent motive. The investigation did not reveal whether there were witnesses or if security footage could clarify the events in the hotel.

Fritchey, who was previously charged with first-degree assault, was incarcerated under a $300,000 cash bond following his initial arraignment. The nature of the case has raised questions due to its unusual emergence; there was no initial police search or alert issued for suspects. Instead, the incident came to light through Dempsey’s own disclosure to hotel staff.

The investigation has since been taken over by the Delaware State Police Troop 4 Criminal Investigations Unit, which specializes in serious crimes in the region. While authorities have not released any updates on a potential motive or additional statements from Dempsey Fritchey, the case continues to unfold in the judicial system.

As it stands, Fritchey is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, with further proceedings to be scheduled. The community is left grappling with the tragic circumstances surrounding this incident, which has drawn significant attention given its nature and the lack of public information initially available.
