EPF Savings and Ringgit Value Decline Under Scrutiny in Dewan Rakyat Session

KUALA LUMPUR: As the value of the ringgit continues to decline and concerns grow over the retirement savings of EPF contributors, Thursday’s session in the Dewan Rakyat is set to address these pressing issues. Discussions are expected to center around the impact of the depreciating ringgit, with Finance Minister set to respond to inquiries raised by lawmakers during the Minister’s Question Time (MQT).

Hassan Abdul Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) will be directing questions towards the government’s strategies in addressing the alarmingly low retirement savings of EPF contributors aged 45 and above, with 35% reportedly having savings below RM10,000. These concerns highlight the importance of financial planning and security for retirees as they approach their later years.

Following the question and answer session, discussions will shift to the debate on the Royal address delivered by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim during the opening of Parliament’s current session. The agenda, as outlined on the Parliament’s official website, details a comprehensive schedule spanning 19 days, with various key topics to be deliberated over the course of the session.

The Dewan Rakyat session will encompass debates on the Royal address from February 27 to March 7, followed by responses from relevant ministries over the subsequent four days starting March 11. This will pave the way for the presentation and deliberation of Bills and government matters from March 18 to 27, underscoring the busy legislative agenda facing lawmakers in the coming weeks.
