DeKalb, IL — A tragic domestic incident in DeKalb, Illinois, ended in the death of 31-year-old Jasmine Dejournette early Tuesday morning. Devonne L. Montgomery, 30, who had been in a relationship with Dejournette, has been charged with first-degree murder following the discovery of Dejournette’s body with severe injuries in her home on West Hillcrest Drive.
Dejournette was found unresponsive by police officers responding to a 911 call made by Montgomery at approximately 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday. According to court records, a forensic pathologist identified the cause of death as brain hemorrhaging from excessive blunt force trauma, highlighting significant facial injuries.
In the wake of the tragedy, loved ones remembered Dejournette as a generous and caring individual. A GoFundMe campaign has been organized to support her family during this time, providing for her funeral expenses and celebrating her life as a “beautiful soul” whose “presence could light up any room.”
Montgomery faces multiple charges including two counts of first-degree murder, felony aggravated domestic battery, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. His criminal history includes prior convictions for aggravated battery and unlawful use of a weapon. If convicted, Montgomery could face life imprisonment.
Court documents revealed a tumultuous relationship between Montgomery and Dejournette, with over 8,000 instant messages exchanged between them in the months leading up to her death. These messages sadly foreshadowed a pattern of abuse, with Dejournette expressing fear and distress about Montgomery’s violent behavior.
On the night prior to the incident, Montgomery was reportedly drinking and playing video games. He initially told police he was not at the apartment during the time of Dejournette’s death, claiming he found her body upon returning from a night out. However, phone location data and further investigation contradicted his account, placing him at the scene.
During the investigation, detectives also uncovered a bloody scene at the couple’s apartment, including blood-soaked clothing and shoes that matched the injuries on Dejournette’s body. A loaded pistol and another gun purchased by Dejournette were found in the home, adding to the grisly evidence.
Montgomery made his initial court appearance on Thursday, where Circuit Court Judge Philip Montgomery ordered him held without bail pending trial. His next court date is scheduled for February 5.
